Do Superheroes Grow Old?

  • CONFERENCE HALL - Florence Filberg Centre 411 Anderton Avenue Courtenay, BC, V9N 6C6 Canada (map)

Come and find out! The Second Stage Players invite you to join them for Do Superheroes Grow Old? A lively and entertaining play about seniors, written for seniors, by a senior, and performed by seniors.

Playwright, Jean Higginson, was inspired by the fascinating relationship between authors and the characters they create. She explains, “I have always been curious about interviews I’ve heard with authors describing how their characters have made them change elements of their novel or play. I wondered how that would work in actual practice, and so I began to imagine characters coming to life and actually visiting their authors.”

The director, Phil Adams, loves this play and how Act one and Act two are completely different. He commented, “In Act one, the main character is at a time in her life where she has become stale in her writing, but finds inspiration and satisfaction in the latter half of the act. Act two shows the fruits of her labour and perhaps a new direction in her craft.”

Judy Johnson, assistant director, adds, “I like the ‘play within a play’ motif. It is so clever and sophisticated. I am amazed by Jean’s writing. It’s better than some plays I’ve seen written by professional writers.” Jean imagined what superhero films might look like if the heroes and the villains were seniors. She realized that senior superheroes and supervillains would be very different than their younger counterparts-not only because of their wealth of experiences, but also because they must contend with declining abilities. Yet, in Jean’s vision, these experiences could also make seniors stronger in unexpected ways. Ultimately, she imagined a very different kind of superhero story.

Come and discover this thoughtful, humorous, and unconventional take on aging, creativity, and what it really means to be a hero.
