June 2023 - President’s Message

A message from Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club president

And once again it's "Greetings To All".......I do hope that all is going well in your world. May has been such a great weather month that it's somewhat sad to see it come to an end. However, rumor has it that things will continue to stay this way into June so we'll be able to enjoy these great sunny days for a time yet. And around the club things are as usual, very busy. Unfortunately our Club Coordinator Janet had a mishap with her bicycle earlier in May and came away with a rather badly broken wrist. She is now in the midst of a "Healing Period" and we wish her a very speedy recovery. The injury slowed her down a bit but she has been a real trooper through it all and has continued her duties......and become a rather talented one hand typist. All the best Janet.

First of all a few club things of note. We really do need some more kitchen volunteers. Your commitment as a volunteer can be as little as once a month. If your talents happen to include kitchen things, then this might be the opportunity you have been looking for. Name tags are now available for members to purchase at a cost of $10. If you happen to be a Volunteer Activity Rep the cost is waived and you get a freebee. There is a fill-out form at reception to fill out if you wish a name tag. Members are encouraged to wear the name tags while at the club or on bus trips as it really helps to build community.

There will be an Evergreen Members Meeting this fall where you will be able to get an update on all things Evergreen and also be given an opportunity to provide input and/or voice your opinion. We are always looking for ideas and suggestions on how to add to Evergreen activities. The June Mystery Trip is scheduled for the 9th and will leave the upper level exit at 10:00 am. The cost of the trip is $60. This price does not include food or drinks. The Skywalk and Butchart Gardens tour is set to go on Wednesday June 21 from the upper level exit at 8:00 am with return time expected to be around 7:30pm. The fare is $160 and includes bus costs and entrance fees to Butchart Gardens. By the way, the Malahat Skywalk experience is "Wheelchair Friendly" and the ramp to the top is slow and gradual making it walker friendly. See the trip page in this newsletter for further detail.

Before I depart I want to pass along this tidbit that was passed along to me as I approach number Eighty-Two......I would guess that most of our membership came into this world in the 40's, 50's & 60's.........we then did our early growing up during that same time period. We then began our studies and matured a bit during the 50's, 60's & 70's ...we also dated and discovered romance and love during that same time period. Then it was marriage, family and finding out who and what we were during the 60's, 70's & 80's. We then stabilized and supposedly got wiser during the 70's, 80's & 90's. Then with our new found maturity and new found wisdom we strode firmly into the 2000's.......and here we are in 2023........we have lived during NINE DIFFERENT DECADES, TWO DIFFERENT CENTURIES, and TWO DIFFERENT MILLENNIA........ CONGRATULATIONS!!!! .......Adios my friends.....gk
