President’s Message - April 2023

A message from Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club president

Greeting once again everyone!!!....another month has passed by and every next one seems to arrive earlier than ordered....at least it sure seems that way. Hopefully the old adage about March in like a lion and out like a lamb will hold true this time around and at the moment it seems so. We enjoyed a cool and not so pleasant entry but as a I put this report together at the dismissal of March, all seems warm and wonderful....with hopefully the promised good weather to follow. Promising good weather however is a roll of the dice as we could all take a lesson from the weather......it pays no attention to criticism.

March was an interesting month as it was first of all the happening of the 2023 Spring Equinox in North America (March 20) which meant it was the first day of spring in the Comox Valley. There is a lot of "Astronautial Stuff" associated with this event but in simple terms for us here on the world's greatest island it means more sunshine, warmer temperatures, blooming flowers and other seasonal effects that are noticeable to everyone. Along with this equinox stuff March provided the dreaded "Daylight Saving Time" that robbed us all of that hour of sleep. Maybe some day there will come a time when we will live under one time zone....it's everyone's best guess. And of course March brought us St Patrick's Day and we at the Evergreen enjoyed all of that...and Mary & Peggy provided a great St Patrick's Friday night dance.

And finally March brought us "March Madness"....a great time for basketball devotees. We are down to the "Final Four" as I write this report, and it seems that all the predictions went south....those teams predicted to do well are now playing golf while the so-called pretenders are trying to win it all....strange world.

Now what about our recent fundraiser! I saw many of you there and if you were, you were provided with some wonderful entertainment. A fellow by the name of Paul Valdemar Horsdal .....just plain old "VALDY" to us.......dropped in to the Evergreen this past Wednesday for a evening concert. He was just great. Two hours of "Valdy Folk Music" from his excellent and varied repertoire lead to a great evening of entertainment. He is 77 years old now and for us that have followed his career, he is still quite a remarkable entertainer.....still a masterful guitarist and his pipes remain strong and true. Valdy has been the winner of two Juno Awards for Folk Singer of the year and Folk entertainer of the year and has received seven other Juno nominations. He and his wife Kathleen call Saltspring Island home. And as a FUNDRAISER the club made some money. All in all, "A GREAT EVENING".

That's about a wrap for now but before I go I would like to pass along some things I've learned about growing old......Death is the number one killer in the world.....Life is sexually transmitted......Good health is simply the slowest possible rate at which one can die....and finally, Life is somewhat like a jar of Jalapeno peppers.....what you do today may burn your ass tomorrow........ ADIOS!!..gk
