November 2022 - President’s Message

A message from Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club president

Greetings Everyone!!!.....So quickly another month has passed and with Halloween now in the rear view we are on the home stretch to Christmas.......and how did that happen so quickly?? I really thought and hoped that getting this old would take a little longer. Now, after a period of absolutely perfect weather through the early weeks of October we now seem to be slipping and sliding into another one of those ugly Novembers that are part of life in the Comox Valley. For the next number of weeks we can expect just about any kind of meteorological conditions to come and go and come and go as we move through to the new spring of 2023. Hang in there my friends, all that’s bad will pass.

And now onto things more pleasant. It seems that our recent open house was nothing less than a superb success. We were hoping for that and I think we got what we were looking for. After Covid had driven our membership numbers down I am pleased to say that numbers are back on the upswing and have been on a steady climb since our open house. Janet tells me that we are now back above the 1500 mark with the present count at 1535. That is great news and it means fresh faces at our many activity clubs and new and/or renewed friendships throughout the Evergreen Club. However, it also means an increased need for new volunteers.

Volunteers play a key role in keeping our club running with our many programs. This is especially true in our kitchen and this continues to be our biggest need. If you have some time to give in the kitchen please talk to Cathy about those opportunities. Our trips are very popular and some of the new offerings will include the Chemainus Theatre, Butchart Gardens, Van Gough Exhibit and the Nanaimo Craft Fair. Details for any and all of these will appear in the monthly newsletters. I would also like to mention the formation of a new club. The Evergreen Supper Club launched in October and will happen on the 3rd Wednesday of each month hereafter moving around to the many great restaurants in the valley. Phil Parmley is the Activity Rep for the club. We also had a great Halloween Dance on Friday Night with an assortment of great costumes and a great evening of dancing with The Amigos Dance Band. We will also be having a Mini Craft Fair on Wednesday November 23rd. Details in the newsletter. Some of the December events to plan for include the Christmas Singalong on Friday December 2nd at 10:30 am, the Comox Valley Concert Band concert on Sunday December 4th, and the New Years Eve gala will be returning.

In closing I would once again like to welcome our newest members and also welcome back to any and all that have returned after covid. We want you to enjoy the many great things that happen here at "The Evergreen". May our relationship with you all endure. And now a closing reflection....people who wonder if the glass is half empty or half full miss the point.....the glass is refillable.

Adios for now...gk
