President’s Message - September 2024

A message from Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club president

Greetings Everyone!!... Don't look now but it appears that summer is slowly but surely sneaking into the rear view and a Comox Valley fall is just around the corner. It certainly has been a summer of pretty good weather with lots of sunshine and unfortunately not near enough rain. With temperatures running in the mid to high twenties most of the summer it did get a bit uncomfortable at times... but I have always been a sun lover so personally, I didn't mind too much. A lot of great happenings in the valley this past summer and I hope many of you had the opportunity to take some or all of them in. There was the Courtenay Canada Day celebrations, the Vancouver Island Music Festival, the Filberg Festival, Comox Nautical Days, the Cumberland Wild Music Festival, the Cumberland Rib Fest... and of course the Sunday evening concerts in Simms Park. Our Evergreen Club contribution was the Canada Day Tea Dance at the Native Sons Hall with the Georgia Strait Big Band on July 1st... it was well received.

I want to let you know that the club will be hiring an assistant for Janet, our CRA Executive Director and Evergreen Club Coordinator. Interviews of potential hires has already been completed and we will be naming the person soon. That will increase our Evergreen Club Staff by one. Alisha and Paula will remain in their present staff positions and Cathy will be taking on some addtional tasks.

Another thing that I wish to mention at this time is our upcoming Evergreen Club Open House which will take place on Monday, September 23 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. This is a very special event that takes place every two years. Hopefully we will have all of our Activity Clubs involved. Each will host a table and even provide an interactive activity if possible. The entire Filberg Centre is booked for this event. I would ask that you share this news with your neighbours and friends that could become or are interested in becoming members. Let them see the fun and exciting activities that members of the Evergreen Club enjoy. We are a non-profit organization offering social recreational programs for adults 55+.

I just want to WELCOME BACK everyone who sort of took the summer off to enjoy life and the grandkids... A couple of thing to pass along before I go... "You know you're getting old when a recliner and a heating pad is your idea of a hot date"... "It's better to grow old with a sense of humor than to grow old with no sense at all"... Enough, enough!!...

ADIOS my friends... gk
