President’s Message - May 2024

A message from Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club president

Greetings Everyone!!...So May is here...the month of warmer rains, greener grass, songbirds singing.....well wait a minute now, for it seems that the songbirds ain't what they used to be and that is most unfortunate. Many, if not most of us, can reach back and remember when we were awakened by those wonderful sounds of songbirds singing us awake. It was a warm and cheery begining to the upcoming day. But that seems so lost in today's world because over the last twenty plus years our songbird population has taken a beating. There are a number of reasons which include things like habitat loss, collisions with glass in today's high rise world, toxic pesticides, and insect declines causing food shortages....but the biggest killer by far??...."CATS". Environment Canada studies estimate that that roaming cats are responsible for 200 million songbird deaths per year, and that's just in Canada. And if we look globally, cats are responsible for the extinction of 34 species of songbirds. Frightening statistics, so I thought I would pass some of this along. Keep your cats from wandering folks and don't be proud of Mitten the Kitten when she brings home a trophy. Enough of the bird news but remember.....you can help!!

Our Executive team said goodbye to one of our Directors this past Tuesday evening. Wayne King has retired from the executive and with the benefit of a fine meal and good company we celebrated his retirement. Wayne has given many years of service to the Evergreen Club an we thank him for his service. Coming on to the the Executive Committee is Maria Raeli. WELCOME Maria....we wish you the best. Janet will introduce Maria in this newsletter.

I would like to reflect for a moment on our recent Volunteer Luncheon. First of all, many thanks to our gal Cathy for organizing and putting on a great luncheon. Our guests (THE VOLUNTEERS) enjoyed a great meal and a great social afternoon. The bean bag competition was a great addition and the entertainment, provided by Elvis Presley's long lost brother Greg, was most satisfying. A well done event enjoyed by all that attended.

And do not forget the two big fundraisers coming up this month. The Comox Valley Concert Band is coming by for a Mother’s Day Concert on Sunday May 12th and the “Rock & Roll Revival” concert will be held on Sunday May 26th. Details for both of these events are contained in this newsletter.

And before I go I have this to say...."Blessed are those that can laugh at themselves, for they will forever be amused". ADIOS my friends....gk
